the queeration of a space
The shrine was a work that surrounded the experience of queer people in relationship with queer fear and the way safe queer spaces take place.
Curated as a journey on three stages:
-
The entrance constituted of me, dressed as if I were going to a party, presenting myself as queer leading the way for the audience through example.
-
The preamble was a walkable space with the contextualization of queer experience throughout history, in a collage passageway that connected queer achievements and queer fear.
-
The mirror was the last part of the journey. Upon travelling through the passway you would encounter a room with a mirror lighted by a single spotlight and the overpowering noise of a subwoofer, giving the bass of Charli XCX Vroom Vroom. On top of this, I will say the definition of queer fear, creating distortion. I used this as a commentary on the queer party scene as both safe and liberating but inherently alienating and dangerous place.
